That is ALARMING...
Charles Flores
37:39
How has school-site leadership responded to these disturbing trends?
Steven Neff
37:53
For data collection purposes, are states weighing in on whether removal from virtual learning environments constitutes a suspension that must be documented?
Sarah Sandelius
39:03
Have you seen any changes in discipline policies because of changes in the use of school resource officers or any promising work happening as a result of the racial reckoning happening across the country?
Deanna Kuhney
39:17
Yes, which data are you examining…not just numbers but also voice(student, staff, families) in order to determine the root causes of the why.
Tracy Oliver-Gary
39:20
I am thinking about the correlation between disciplinary actions and curricula/scaffold mismatches.
Kim Buckheit
41:13
What trends may be happening in other states (or your thoughts) related to shifting from suspending a student to instead assigning them to virtual learning from home (not calling this a suspension).
Alicia Mercer
42:57
I am concerned that we tend to share this information and data with LEAs over and over but progress is painfully slow in changing practice. It’s very difficult to convey the message that, “it isn’t the students”, there are current practices in place that attributing to the dispro we see. Has anyone had something that has worked and made radical change? It’s so hard to see the numbers year after year. It’s like we are putting band-aid on a major wound.
Debbie Reagin
43:48
Are there evidence based strategies to help with current mandatory 10-day suspensions for marijuana and drug paraphernalia?
Melissa Mayville
44:01
What guidance could be issued as part of a revision and reinstatement of the 2014 school discipline guidance by the Department and the Department of Justice that was rescinded by former Secretary DeVos to impact changes in discipline policies?
Charles Flores
44:42
LAUSD has approved a $25 million budget cut from School Police
Sarah Sandelius
44:46
Thanks!
Frances
45:38
Are we too simply correlating removal of SROs to reducing discipline disproportionality? There are disciplines/suspension/expulsion decisions made separately from SRO involvement, and we have to keep these in mind - these are decisions made by school staff.
Jennifer Barnhill
46:14
Can be written in their IEP not to where a mask if related to their disability.

Joshua Lynch
46:47
Steven, WA has guidance on exclusions from remote learning environments for purposes of due process procedures and discipline data reporting that aligns with the state's existing discipline regulations. However, implementation is another topic...
Joshua Lynch
49:49
The CRDC should revisit the current definition for "In-School Suspension" including language regarding direct supervision meaning school personnel are "physically" in the same location as students under their supervision...
Deanna Kuhney
57:18
@Stephanie, yes! How do we address school policies, practices, and adult behaviors. The research shows that the racial discipline gap is due largely to subjective discipline reasons, cultural mismatch(teacher-student), implicit bias, and poor teacher-student relationships- all of these have to more with adults vs students.
Sarah Sandelius
01:00:04
I think schools that had robust MTSS structures may be positioned to do this well in the coming year because they have the systems to frame discipline and instructional intervention as aligned initiatives that have tremendous impacts on each other.
Sarah Sandelius
01:00:51
Discipline, behavioral support, and instructional intervention (sorry forgot that piece)
Deanna Kuhney
01:08:13
Yes, it’s hard to change hearts and minds…so we have to change the discipline policies (the subjective components of those policies).
Holly Bell (she/her)
01:08:47
Paul Gorski with the Equity Literacy Institute is an excellent resource for implicit bias training and much more.
Tracy Oliver-Gary
01:09:06
We need more accountability for enacting/implementing anti-bias behaviors and practices. We often provide PD, but it means nothing without policies and accountability for putting what is discussed/learned into practice.
Sarah Sandelius
01:09:19
We’re actually running a series that gets to a lot of those mindsets - implicit bias, functions of behavior, growth mindset…we’re discussing next month, but the series starts before: bit.ly/ABC_COVID
Kim Buckheit
01:10:23
I believe that Maryland is doing many of these things over the course of the last few years. We and our system level experts would be happy to share some of the practices we have found to be successful with individuals if they want to reach out, Kimberly.buckheit@maryland.gov.
